'Star Trek Into Darkness' Overthrows 'Iron Man 3' From Box Office Throne

The Chris Pine-starring film debuts atop the box office, forcing Robert Downey Jr.'s flick to be in the second place.

After two consecutive weeks, "" no longer rules the North American box office as strong newcomer "" dethrones the starrer. The latest film from J.J. Abrams acquires the top spot with $70.6 million, slightly below its predecessor "", which opened to $75.2 million in April 2009.

"It appears that four years of anticipation and help from 3-D ticket prices isn't really giving 'Into Darkness' much of a boost," Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo comments. "[The opening] would normally be cause for panic, though it's possible that most audiences just weren't aware that the movie was opening on Thursday [sudden change by Paramount Studios]."

"IM3" continues to draw crowds by taking in $35.2 million in weekend ticket sales. Following in the third place is last week's runner-up "", a Jazz Age drama from director Baz Luhrmann which grabs $23.4 million its second week.

Michael Bay's "", which stars , falls to No. 4 right in its fourth run by earning $3.1 million. 's animated feature , meanwhile, lands in the fifth place at the box office with $2.8 million.
