AceShowbiz - The long-burning question about Ted's wife has finally been answered in "How I Met Your Mother" season 8 finale. The show revealed the face of the titular mother as Ted and the gang were heading for Barney and Robin's wedding in the final few seconds of the May 13 episode.
[SPOILER ALERT!] Carrying a yellow umbrella, Ted's future wife is featured buying a ticket to Farhampton, presumably to play in the band at the wedding. She, however, didn't share a scene with Josh Radnor's character in the said outing.
Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas previously said that Ted and his future wife's official meeting takes place after the wedding. CBS has confirmed that actress Cristin Milioti was the one playing the titular mother.
Speaking of their decision to reveal the mother at the end of season 8 while the show is extended to season 9, Bays tells Entertainment Weekly, "One of our hard and fast rules [when we thought we were doing eight seasons] was that we didn't want to meet her until the very end. We felt like, now that we're doing another year, let's find an interesting new twist."
Regarding their choice of actress to portray the titular mother, Thomas explains they never wanted "it to be a big famous star because we didn't want the wider audience to have associations with whatever actress this would be." He further reasons, "The whole idea is that Ted's never seen this woman before, so it better feel that way to the audience."
Milioti is known for her Tony-nominated performance in Broadway musical "Once". She also had a recurring role as Johnny Sack's daughter Catherine on "The Sopranos" and once guest starred on "30 Rock".
