AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez's Bollywood-inspired performance at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, April 14 caused a stir as Hindu groups in America slammed her for wearing a bindi when singing "Come and Get It". Describing Gomez as culturally insensitive, the leaders of the religious groups demanded an apology from the 20-year-old pop singer.

"The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance," said the Universal Society of Hinduism leader, Rajan Zed. "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol."

"It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed," added Zen. "Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."

The Hindu groups weren't the only ones who thought Gomez's bindi was a mistake. She got criticized by Twitter users as well. "The bindi is not just some fashion accessory you can throw on," tweeted a user. "Cultural appropriation man." Another user wrote, "Selena Gomez, take that bindi of your head, cultural appropriation is not cute."
