The 1921 painting by French artist Fernand Leger will go under the hammer in New York after being displayed in Hong Kong and London.

AceShowbiz - Madonna is selling an abstract painting from her art collection for good cause. The pop singer will donate proceeds from the sales to the Ray of Light Foundation to fund an education project for girls in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries where education for females is rare.

"I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls' schools. We don't have time to be complacent," she says in a statement. "I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable - Educating Girls!"

Bought by the Material Girl at an auction in 1990, the 1921 Cubist masterpiece by French artist Fernand Leger is expected to fetch $5 -7 million. It will be displayed in Hong Kong and London before being auctioned by Sotheby's in New York during an Impressionist and Modern Art sale on May 7.

Madge recently visited Malawi with the two children she adopted from the poverty-stricken country. The performing artist dubbed the country's largest international philanthropic donor visited the schools she helped to fund, along with David Banda, adopted in 2006 and Mercy James, in 2009.

She also talked to President Joyce Banda to discuss the alleged mismanagement of her charity project that initially aimed at building schools in the African country. The issue was brought to attention after Education minister Eunice Kazembe said her team built classroom blocks, and not schools.

Trevor Nielson, the singer's philanthropy manager, said in her defense, "The schools are built to the exact national standards of Malawi, like every other Malawian school. The bottom line is that 3,800 children are going to school now who were not going to school before."

Madonna is not the only Hollywood star who is supporting girls' education outside the United States. Actress Angelina Jolie and TV mogul Oprah Winfrey have both done the same, building schools in Afghanistan and South Africa respectively.

It's recently revealed that Angie would donate proceeds from the sales of her jewelry line to fund the all-girl school she built in Afghanistan. As for Oprah, her good intention was once marred after a staff member at her school was accused of assaulting students.
