The record's producer, Major Lazer's , revealed Snoop apparently "likes to have the female backing vocals" in his tracks.

Doing additional back-up vocals on the single is Angela Hunte, one of the principal songwriters in Snoop's new reggae album. Like in "No Guns Allowed", Snoop enlists the percussion-playing skills of 's drummer Stewart Copeland for the Ariel Rechtshaid and Dre Skull co-produced track.

"Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" is only the first of two tracks that Snoop and Cyrus will be teaming up on this year. The 20-year-old singer has confirmed that the newly "reincarnated" reggae man would also sing on the lead single off her forthcoming album when it comes out this year, which Cyrus previously touted would be "the biggest record I've ever had."
