NBC's Anchor Jenna Wolfe Expecting Baby Girl With Same-Sex Partner Stephanie Gosk
NBC's "Weekend Today" anchor Jenna Wolfe and the network's foreign correspondent Stephanie Gosk publicly come out as a couple and announce that baby are on the way for them. Jenna naturally broke the news on "Today" show and in a pregnancy blog she wrote for the TV station, in addition to announcing the baby's gender on the latest issue of PEOPLE.
On the Wednesday, March 27 episode of the morning show, the mom-to-be gushed, "This is big for me, I'm actually pregnant," adding, "I'm quite pregnant, actually." She said she was due to give birth on August 27 and promised she would take fans through every step of her pregnancy on a diary-styled blog for NBC.
Although Stephanie kept telling her to "hurry up" and deliver already, Jenna thought it was important to tell her story first. "This is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to us," she said to PEOPLE. "But I don't want to bring my daughter into a world where I'm not comfortable telling everyone who I am and who her mother is."
Jenna underwent artificial insemination with an anonymous donor in December and spilled they're expecting a baby girl. The couple of three years said they would eventually get married but would focus on the baby for now. "For a long time I had feared I would never have a child," Stephanie said, before Jenna added, "We can't wait to start."
Like Stephanie, Jenna also never felt so domesticated and expected to be a mother before. "As a kid, I would have chosen raising my adrenaline over raising children any day of the week. But then a funny thing happened on my way to adulthood. I grew up. I ran smack into the old nursery rhyme: 'First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes Jenna pushing a baby carriage'," she wrote on her blog. "But while my life didn't quite unfold as rhymed, it's awfully close."
"Something just sort of told me it was time. Two years into a great relationship and we felt like we wanted to share our adventures with a wide-eyed, little person. The more we talked about it, the better the idea seemed. And so in December, we embarked on Operation Baby," the TV presenter continued in her post.
The anchor who's five months pregnant then shared her experience of suffering morning sickness, "This baby doesn't care that I was in phenomenal shape before getting pregnant. She doesn't care that I had a near perfect diet. She made the first four months brutal for me. B-R-U-T-A-L. There were days when all I could eat were Saltine crackers, Apple Jacks dry cereal and plain pasta. Let's just say I have a newfound respect for any woman anywhere who tells me they've experienced morning sickness."
She promised to follow up the first installment of her mommy diary with more posts "documenting my fears, funnies and follies that come with doing this for the first time. I've never changed a diaper. I don't know how to decorate a nursery. I don't really understand what a breast pump is. And don't get me started on the feeding schedule."
"Other things on my mind that I'll be sharing over the next 20 weeks: my romp through the 'What to Expect' books (I expected bigger font, more pictures and less pages), the advice I'm getting from people (everyone knows the baby gadget I absolutely MUST have, and if I don't, my baby will be an outcast in society), and the weird thing in our culture where apparently it's OK to just walk up to you and touch your belly. Did I not get that memo?"
Their announcement was made in the same week the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in two cases regarding same sex marriage.
