Karl Urban to Star in J.J. Abrams' Futuristic Drama 'Human'

The 'Star Trek' actor is set to play a respected police officer in FOX's high-concept pilot.

New Zealand actor has landed a role in a drama pilot for FOX titled "Human". Urban will play John Kennex, a respected police officer who has emotionally shut down after a tragic mission made him critically injured.

The drama is described as an action-packed buddy-cop show set in the near future, when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved humanlike androids. If "Human" succeeds to move beyond the pilot stage, it will mark Urban's first series-regular role on U.S. television.

Urban, who is famous for playing Vaako in "", will team up with "" star . Ealy will play an android detective named Dorian, who has a better grasp of humanity than his human partner does. The supporting cast of the pilot includes Mackenzie Crook, Michael Irby, and Lili Taylor.

"" writer J.H. Wyman is chosen to pen the script and to serve as executive producer alongside J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. "Fringe" director Brad Anderson will direct the pilot.

Urban reunites with Abrams after previously working together in "" in 2009. He will reprise his role as Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in Abrams' "" which will arrive in U.S. theaters May 17.
