The former 'Felicity' star will reportedly take the female lead role in the 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' sequel, starring opposite Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee and Gary Oldman.

AceShowbiz - Keri Russell joins the cast of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". According to Variety, Russell has been cast in the lead female role, but there's still no information on the character she will be playing.

Russel joins already-announced cast members Andy Serkis, who will reprise his role as Caesar, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee and Gary Oldman. The upcoming sci-fi film will be helmed by Matt Reeves who takes over the duty from Rupert Wyatt who directed the first film. Mark Bomback pens the script while Peter Chernin, Dylan Clarke, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa serve as producers.

The plot and some character details are still kept under wraps, but the film is said to be set 15 years after the events of the first film. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" finds most of humanity wiped out and the intelligent apes ruling over the world. A small group of San Francisco-based scientists forms a resistance against the apes while Caesar (Serkis) tries to maintain order and power within his new civilization.

This film marks a reunion between Russel and Reeves who worked together in "Felicity". Along with J.J. Abrams, Reeves created and directed the popular television series which aired for four seasons from 1998 to 2002.

Russell is currently starring on FX's television series "The Americans". She was last seen on the big screen in "Austenland", a romantic comedy film which also stars Jennifer Coolidge and Bret McKenzie.

The sequel of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is targeting to start its production in spring this year for a May 23, 2014 release in U.S. theaters.
