The 'American Beauty' director, however, doesn't rule the possibility of returning to the franchise again 'sometime in the future.'

It's confirmed, Sam Mendes won't direct the next James Bond movie. The "" helmer says in an interview that he was forced to turn down an offer from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to take the directing seat for the 24th installment of the 007 movie franchise due to other commitments.

"Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life," the 47-year-old British filmmaker explains to Empire, "but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond."

"It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara's very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie," Mendes says, hoping he could be back to the franchise for another future project. "I feel very honored to have been part of the Bond family and very much hope I have a chance to work with them again sometime in the future."

"Skyfall" was released in fall 2012. It has earned more than $1.1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film worldwide for Sony Pictures, the second-highest-grossing film of 2012, and the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time.
