Clive Davis Continues to Defend Memoir, Howard Stern Accuses Him of Degrading Kelly Clarkson
Clive Davis continues to say that what he says about Kelly Clarkson in his new memoir is true, despite her denial. "Before this chapter went to press I had five independent, music major players read it, who were there during that periodÖand they totally verified it," he says to Ryan Seacrest in a new interview.
"We've had differences in the past," he explains on "On Air with Ryan Seacrest". "From the very beginning I believed in Kelly and I still believe in her as an artist. What our memory differs over is what and how much she disliked 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Behind These Hazel Eyes.' and how much I liked 'Because of You' when I first heard it."
He adds, "The important thing is, as an artist, I do want to make it clear Kelly Clarkson is still growing. I've seen the growth in her and dispute our different memory recall issues. The bigger issue as an artist is she is growing and she will have a major career."
Howard Stern, however, is not impressed by the producer's story. In his own radio show, the shock jock accuses the music mogul of degrading the winner of "American Idol" season one. "I think she has an amazing voice, and the girl has worked hard to get to where she is," he says. "I don't understand Clive Davis' motivation for knocking this chick down."
"I always find it sickening when management guys like to set the record straight about how f**king creative and what geniuses they are," he continues. "And, like, this guy's trying to diminish what she does? Doesn't he have enough in life? Can't he sort of tell his story without f**king degrading her and putting her down?"
Davis claimed in his book that Clarkson made poor choices on what song she wanted on her album, but she insisted it was the other way around. "His stories and songs are mixed up," she reacted. "I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans."
Offering her side of story about her alleged breakdown Davis wrote on his tome, Clarkson explained, "I cried after I played him a song I had written about my life called 'Because Of You'. I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 'sh***y writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.' "
"He continued on about how the song didnít rhyme and how I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with. But I continued to fight for the song and the label relented. And it became a worldwide hit. He didnít include that in the book."
