The 'Blade Runner' actress, the son of Robert F. Kennedy and other environmental activists were arrested while tying themselves to the White House gate to protest against Keystone oil pipeline.

AceShowbiz - Daryl Hannah, Connor Kennedy and his father Robert F. Kennedy, along with dozens of other environmental activist from the Sierra Club, were arrested on Wednesday, February 13. They were arrested in an action handcuffing themselves to the White House gate, protesting the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

"We think this is a decisive issue," Kennedy said in a telephone interview about his act opposing the $7 billion pipeline. "If they build this, it's game over for the climate. If they unlock this Pandora's box, there will be no way we'll save the planet."

Executive director Michael Brune is the first Sierra Club leader to be arrested in an act of civil disobedience. "We want to send a strong message that we expect the president's ambitions to meet the scale of the challenge and reject a pipeline that carries dirty, thick oil," Brune said. He added that the oil might contribute to global warming.

The protest over Keystone XL pipeline on Wednesday was not the first time. Last October, a similar protest, also involving Hannah, happened in northern Texas. She and a 78-year-old landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, were arrested in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas and were taken to the Wood County Jail.

Keystone XL pipeline is a 4-year-old project which has been debated since it may lead to climate change. The pipeline will carry heavy tar-sands crude oil from Canada, to Texas' Gulf Coast refineries. The pipeline was routed to cross the sensitive land in Nebraska, and now that Nebraska's Governor has approved a new route, it's now up to the U.S. Department to green light or put a stop to the project.
