The Iranian hostage thriller claims the top best film prize in addition to bringing Affleck in winning the best director award.

AceShowbiz - Before the United States holds its 85th Academy Awards, the U.K. wrapped its most prestigious film awards the 2013 BAFTA Awards on Monday, February 11 local time. Winning big at the prize-giving event was "Argo", which pocketed a total of three gongs including the coveted best film award.

Ben Affleck's win for best director also came as a surprise, considering the fact that he was infamously snubbed at the upcoming Oscars. Additionally, the Iranian hostage thriller bagged the Best Editing trophy for William Goldenberg.

The film's producer, George Clooney, was on hand to accept the best film trophy. He gushed on his speech, "Ben, if this is your second act, I don't know what in hell you do for your third. You are remarkable. I can't tell you what an honor it's been to work with you."

When it's turn for Affleck to take the podium, he said, "Every single person here has been so nic..." Poking fun at Warner Bros. Pictures, the night's big winner added, "The people from the studio said, 'You know what? We never win'," before he once again gave thanks to the BAFTAs.

Daniel Day-Lewis won the leading actor prize for "Lincoln", while Emmanuelle Riva was named the best leading actress thanks to "Amour". Upon receiving his prize, Lewis joked, "On the chance I might one day have to speak on an occasion as this, I've actually stayed in character as myself for the last 55 years."

He went, "I'm so grateful to BAFTA. My fellow nominees, I don't know if I deserve this. But I do know every one of you deserves it at least as much as I do." Thanking his "Lincoln" team, he said, "My colleagues, I miss you. I wish we were still on this expedition together," and called Steven Spielberg "the rudder of the boat" they sailed on.

Other movies which won multiple awards during the night included "Les Miserables" and "Django Unchained". The former brought Anne Hathaway to win the best supporting actress gong in addition to claiming the best sound, best makeup & hair, and production design trophies. The later, meanwhile, snatched the best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and best original screenplay for Quentin Tarantino.

The 2013 British Academy Film & Television Arts Awards was held at London's Royal Opera House. The show was hosted by Stephen Fry.
