Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment plan the remake of the hit 2000 film starring Jim Carrey based on Dr. Seuss' classic tale.

"" will come back to cinemas, this time in an animated version. It has been confirmed that Universal Pictures and its Illumination Entertainment division are working on a 3D animated remake of the green creature tale created by Dr. Seuss.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animation project will be helmed by Peter Candeland. Illumination's CEO Chris Meledandri serves as the producer, while Audrey Geisel, widow of Dr. Seuss author Theodor Geisel, is set to executive produce. No writer has been tapped to provide the script.

First written in 1957, the "Grinch" tale was adapted into a hit TV animated special in 1966. Back in 2000, a live-action version was made at Universal with portraying the famed green creature. The movie successfully bagged $260 million domestically despite the fact that it was deemed offending Seuss' purists.

The remake project will mark Candeland's first directorial stint for a major film. He was famously known as an up-and-coming director of some commercials and music videos. As for producer Meledandri, he previously produced some movie adaptations of Dr. Seuss' classics, including 2008's "" and 2012's "".
