TV

Dishing on what's next for Jess and Nick after the romantic bombshell, Liz Meriwether says, 'Obviously there are a lot of obstacles to them being together.'

AceShowbiz - After one-and-a-half season, fans' speculation about the romantic tension between Jess and Nick was officially addressed on "New Girl". In the latest episode of the FOX comedy series, [SPOILER ALERT!] the dorky girl and the bartender shared a passionate kiss. He didn't want their first kiss to be a causality of True American game, so he picked a right moment later that night to grab her and planted a smooch on her lips.

After the episode aired, creator Liz Meriwether reveals the kiss almost didn't happen. "There is actually an early draft of the script where he just says, 'Not like this,' and then they didn't kiss at the end," she shares. Meriwether and the writers later changed the script just a week before shooting.

She explains, "We were right on the edge of starting to spin our wheels with their story and holding out any longer felt like not an honest thing. It felt exciting to give ourselves this challenge of how are they going to get out of this or how is this going to affect everything. We came up with the way for him to kiss her the way he wanted to. And as we were pitching it out we were all like, 'That's hot!' "

Jake Johnson was all up for the idea as he shares, "Liz pulled me aside and said they changed the end of the episode." The Nick depicter adds, "I said great. In the past we'd have to do another take because Nick and Jess were sitting too close together and they wanted to keep us apart. So we were really excited we were allowed to go for it."

Whether the romantic bombshell means Jess and Nick are now a couple, Meriwether coyly tells Entertainment Weekly, "Obviously there are a lot of obstacles to them being together. We're just trying to be honest about how we think this relationship would actually go down."

To TV Guide, Meriwether details "the external obstacles" between them. "Like she has a boyfriend and they live together, but there are a lot of internal obstacles for them," she dishes. "They're oil and water a little bit. They don't have a peaceful, happy relationship. They're always fighting and at each other's throats, so a lot of that is actually stirred up by the kiss. For the rest of the season, they're going to be dealing with a lot of those obstacles inside them, and also the fact that they're roommates."

Johnson shares what he expects to happen between Jess and Nick next, "I don't necessarily want them to get married, but I'm really excited their relationship is getting more complicated...I want that relationship to get as complicated as possible before it either ends or becomes real." He jokingly adds, "Next week they get married and Jess gets pregnant. With six babies. It's going to get very interesting."
