AceShowbiz - "Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer", a documentary about the controversial Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot, will soon make its way out onto the small screen. HBO Documentary Films has officially acquired the U.S. television rights to the film during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 20.
The Pussy Riot documentary revolves around Nadia, Masha and Katia who are members of the feminist art collective band. They sparked frenzy after performing a 40-second "punk prayer" inside Russia's main cathedral last year.
The controversial performance led to their arrest, in which the trio were charged with religious hatred. The arrest later stole worldwide attention as many famous stars, including Madonna, The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters and Kate Walsh, launched petition to free the girls. Filled with unparalleled access and exclusive footage, the documentary features an in-depth look at the trio who are now famous with their colorful balaclavas.
"Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer" is directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin. The movie held its sold-out screening at Sundance last Friday. HBO negotiated the deal with Cinetic Media, while Goldcrest Films International will handle the international sales. The exact date of when the docu will be screened on TV is still unclear.
