'Zero Dark Thirty' Easily Tops Box Office in First Wide Release Week

The Osama bin Laden hunt film claims victory on the chart, defeating newcomers 'A Haunted House' and 'Gangster Squad'.

AceShowbiz - Expanding to wide release Stateside, "Zero Dark Thirty (2012)" successfully tops the North American box office this week by taking in $24.4 million. Recently snatching Best Picture nomination at Oscars, the Osama bin Laden hunt movie easily beats this week's new releases, "A Haunted House" and "Gangster Squad".

The Kathryn Bigelow-directed movie, which has been released in selected U.S. theater since December 19, garnered an "A-" CinemaScore from audience. It attracts 60|percent| male moviegoers. Sony Pictures' worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer says, " 'Zero Dark Thirty' is a big success. Kathryn did a masterful job of telling this story."

Open Road Films' horror parody "A Haunted House" enters the chart at number 2 with $18.1 million, exceeding the studio's expectation. "[Writer] Marlon [Wayans] created a groundswell," Open Road's marketing head Jason Cassidy says of the comedy, which attracts 48|percent| African-American moviegoers and 30|percent| Latinos.

"Gangster Squad", meanwhile, opens at number 3 after being postponed from its original 2012 date. Grossing $17 million, the movie receives a "B+" CinemasScore from audience. Securing the fourth and fifth places respectively are Oscar nominees "Django Unchained" and "Les Miserables".

The slavery era film bags $11 million for a total domestic gross of $125.3 million after three weeks of playing Stateside. The musical drama, on the other hand, takes in $9.6 million for a total cume of $119.2 million also in its third week.
