"" is back on track with a third season order. Announcing the show's renewal on early Wednesday, December 12, AMC also revealed that the Western drama series had tapped John Wirth as the new executive producer/showrunner.

"As we gear up for season three of 'Hell on Wheels' we are pleased to have such an accomplished showrunner as John Wirth join our team," said Susie Fitzgerald, AMC's SVP of scripted development and current programming.

Jeremy Gold, head of creative affairs at Endemol Studios and "Hell on Wheels" EP, chimed in, "We look forward to unveiling the next riveting chapter in the complex lives of the denizens of 'Hell on Wheels'. We are delighted that John Wirth will be joining us on this remarkable journey. John is a proven showrunner with a terrific voice and a deep passion for our show."

Wirth, whose credits include a writing gig for "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles", replaces John Shiban who was initially appointed as the showrunner for the third season. Shiban himself replaced creators/executive producers Joe and Tony Gayton who exited the series after their contract wasn't renewed.

Shiban later departed the show, putting the third season renewal on hold.

With Wirth on board as the new showrunner, the period series is now slated to kick off production of its 10-episode third season in spring 2013. The new installment will premiere in the third-quarter.
