Kirstie Alley Had Secret Relationship With Patrick Swayze While Filming 'North and South'
Kirstie Alley reveals she had a secret relationship with "North and South" co-star Patrick Swayze while they were working together to film the miniseries in 1985. The "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" contestant claims the feelings were mutual.
Back then, Kirstie was married to actor Parker Stevenson who actually joined her and Patrick in the 1986 sequel of the miniseries. They were divorced in 1997. The "Dirty Dancing" actor was not single either as he was married to actress Lisa Niemi until his death in 2009.
Kirstie, now 61, says they didn't have a physical relationship and she tried not to "go down that road" although they developed intense feelings for each other. The "Loverboy" actress, however, confesses that she once propositioned Patrick, but he turned her down.
"Both of us were married," she tells Entertainment Tonight. "We did not have an affair. But again, I think what I did was worse. Because I think when you fall in love with someone when you're married, you jeopardize your own marriage and their marriage. It's doubly bad."
The actress, who's friend with Lisa and was asked to speak at Patrick's funeral, adds, "We were creating a future together and we were both married. After Patrick, I made a decision that I was not ever going to involve myself with anyone married." She's uncertain if Lisa knew about their relationship.
Although Kirstie vowed not to fall for her co-star ever again, she was in love with John Travolta with whom she filmed "Look Who's Talking" a few years later. "Believe me, it took everything that I had, inside, outside, whatever, to not run off and marry John. And be with John for the rest of my life," she tells Barbara Walters in a separate interview.
Calling the "Saturday Night Fever" actor the "greatest love of my life," Kirstie explained why she didn't leave her then-husband Parker to be with the man of her dreams, "Because I feel like when you marry someone you're supposed to work hard at it, and you're supposed to make it work."
On top of that, Kirstie opens up about her affair with a man named Jake that led to her divorce with her first husband Bob Alley. "What I did do with Jake was I kissed him. And in my world, in Kirstie world, that meant I had to get a divorce," she says. "It took a long time [to forgive myself] because I was a horrible person, I destroyed my marriage."
The revelations of his past feelings for her co-stars come hot on heels of the release of her new tell-all book, "The Art of Men". Her budding romance with Patrick and her love for John are expected to be unveiled in details in the newly-released tome.
