Oscar-winning 'Inception' cinematographer Wally Pfister is set to make his directorial debut with the Alcon Entertainment project.

AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp could be joining one of the biggest movie projects next year. The actor is in negotiations to star in "Transcendence", which is the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister and may be the starring vehicle for such actors as Christoph Waltz, James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire and Noomi Rapace among others.

The plot of "Transcendence" is being kept under wrap, therefore there is no clue what kind of character Depp will play. The screenplay was written by newcomer Jack Paglen and was developed by Straight Up Films' Annie Marter, who will produce the movie alongside Marisa Polvino, Kate Cohen, David Valdes and Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove of Alcon Entertainment.

Principal photography is set to take place early 2013. Warner Bros. is distributing the film.

"Johnny Depp is one of the most charismatic, talented actors imaginable and we are delighted he is with us on this project," Kosove said in a statement. Pfister added, "I'm thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative."

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas will be executive producers. Nolan has worked with Pfister in "Inception", in which Pfister won an Oscar for cinematography, as well as "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Memento".
