The upcoming installment will comprise of another 12 episodes with the production set to begin next spring.

AceShowbiz - "Homeland" will return for a third season. Showtime announces the renewal just hours after the Golden Globe and the Emmy Award-winning series delivered its highest-rated episode with 1.75 million viewers watching the Sunday, October 21 outing.

"The Emmy wins for 'Homeland' have certainly set the stage for a great second season," Showtime president David Nevins says in a statement. "The writers, cast and crew of 'Homeland' continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride, growing audiences week after week."

He adds, "We can't wait for our viewers to experience what unfolds through the rest of season two. Our partners at Fox 21 have been tremendous, and we are thrilled to begin the planning for 'Homeland' 's third season."

Being a new hit series for Showtime when it launched in October 2011, "Homeland" has garnered critical acclaims and helped its lead stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes win Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Lead Actress in a Drama Series respectively. The sophomore season is outperforming its first season as it debuted to 1.73 million viewers in September this year.

The third season will consist of 12 new, one-hour episodes and will kick off the production in spring 2013. Nevis believes "the core of the writing staff will return," but adds, "Change is inevitable in television, so you can't fear it. And it would probably get boring if we kept it the same group year after year."

As for whether "Homeland" renewal means something for its lead-in "Dexter", Nevins elaborates, "The pairing has worked great, but 'Dexter' is on its own creative trajectory. I think in a lot of ways it's been revitalized in really interesting ways this year. We're at a point now where both shows can stand together or alone. The 'Dexter' decision will be made for a creative reason specific to 'Dexter'."
