'Dancing with the Stars' Week 2 Recap: Sabrina Bryan Soaring, Gilles Marini Consistent
Twelve celebrity contestants and their respective pro dancer partners continued their battle for the Mirror Ball Trophy on "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" Monday, October 1. In the second week, each pair would dance either a jive or a quickstep.
Dancing the jive, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani set the bar high early that night, so Len Goodman commented. Bruno Tonioli stated, "Melissa's the fastest girl in town," as he and the other judges gave the former "The Bachelor" star 23.5 out of 30 points.
Bristol Palin, however, didn't show improvement when dancing the quickstep with Mark Ballas. The judges admitted her performance was exciting and fun, but her "technique was a little bit lowdown." The TV personality scored 18, which was one point less than last week.
On the other hand, Helio Castroneves did his homework to improve his body work. Carrie Ann Inaba praised him, "This week, your body caught up to the charm that was going on on your face." His jive with Chelsie Hightower was scored 23.
Apolo Anton Ohno's quickstep with Karina Smirnoff, meanwhile, deserved a "gold medal," so Len enthused. Bruno also loved his footwork, while Carrie Ann commented, "I felt you were truly driving the dance." The speedskater earned 24.5.
Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel also danced the quickstep, and Len deemed it "great." Bruno commented, "You did a treble quick - I've never seen that before!" and Carrie Ann added, "Your top line is something I've never seen before ever in the history of Dancing with the Stars!" The former Disney star earned 26, which sent her to the top spot on the scoreboard.
After being criticized for her lack in technical skill last week, Kirstie Alley danced a "neat" and "precise" jive with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. "I thought it was a great improvement on last week," Len said, as Carrie Ann advised, "Match your movement style just a little bit more." The actress got 21 points.
Topping the scoreboard last week, Emmitt Smith couldn't outdo himself. His quickstep with Cheryl Burke was scored 22.5, as Carrie Ann thought that some others did better than the former NFL player. Len, however, liked the "cool-cat attitude" and called the overall feel of the dance "great."
Drew Lachey's jive, meanwhile, might save him from landing him in the dangerous zone again this week. "Welcome home, Drew! We've never seen this kind of thing," Carrie Ann gushed, but Bruno reminded him, "Be careful, because you look flat-footed." The 98 Degrees member earned 22.5.
Joey Fatone made some mistakes when dancing the quickstep with Kym Johnson, but he did show an entertaining performance. "Poor posture. Bad footwork. Lost body contact. Frame wasn't constant. But I really enjoyed it," Len commented. The former NSYNC member also earned 22.5.
Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough danced a high-energy jive, which showed "enough technique," but was still great in Len's opinion. Bruno agreed, "That was vibrant, exhilarating, eye-popping!" The judges gave her 25.
Kelly Monaco danced the quickstep, which was deemed "extremely elegant" by Bruno. Still, he noted, "You tend to lose your frame. You messed up a couple of steps." Carrie Ann gave a tip, "Watch your lines when your out of hold." The soap opera star earned 22 points.
Injured Gilles Marini and his partner Peta Murgatroyd wrapped up the show with their jive, which earned 25.5 points. "It's so much fun watching you dance," Carrie Ann said, as Len gushed, "Fast, attack, dynamic - fabulous!"
