MTV Video Music Awards Ratings Drop 50 Percent Than Last Year

The Thursday, September 6 telecast of the annual prize-giving event attracted to only 6.1 million viewers, less than half of the audience who tuned in the 2011 ceremony.

AceShowbiz - MTV might have now realized that it made a blunder by relocating its annual Video Music Awards to Thursday this year. The show ratings dropped drastically from last year as it pulled only around 6.1 million viewers and a 2.8 rating among adults 18-49 on September 6.

The number is less than half of the audience who watched the 2011 event (12.5 million viewers and a 6.2 rating in the demo), which was held on Sunday, August 28. Ironically, last year's telecast set a record by drawing the biggest audience in the network's history.

This year's VMAs started an hour earlier at 8 P.M. and ended at 10 P.M. to avoid conflict with President Obama's planned speech at the Democratic National Convention. Despite the major drop, the show still ranked No. 1 among other cable's shows on Thursday night.

As usuals, the latest MTV VMAs was supported by a bunch of well-known celebrities namely Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Nicki Minaj who were tapped as musical performers. Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus were on hand as presenters that night, which saw One Direction as the biggest winner with three nods.
