MTV VMAs 2012: One Direction Win Big, Rihanna Claims Video of the Year

One Direction bag their second Moonman after winning the Best Artist prize, while Riri wins the most coveted award thanks to her video 'We Found Love'.

AceShowbiz - More winners at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards were revealed. After 2 Chainz performed "Yuck!" with Lil Wayne and Green Day performed "Kill the DJ", "Robert Pattinson took on the stage for "The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn Part II" presentation. Noticeably absent during the session was Kristen Stewart, who's currently in Toronto to promote her film "On the Road" at TIFF.

Following the new "Breaking Dawn II" trailer presentation, One Direction were once again mentioned as a winner. This time around, the British boyband were presented with Best New Artist prize, beating the likes of Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen, Frank Ocean and The Wanted. Handing out the award to the boys were Wiz Khalifa and Ke$ha.

"We'd just like to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you tonight... And all of the people who work with us every day, back stage, our crew. We have an amazing crew," said Harry Styles upon receiving the group's second Moonman. "To win one Moonman is ridiculous, to win two is crazy, and to perform is just absolutely insane."

The U.S. women's gymnastics team introduced Alicia Keys on the stage before the diva delivered her latest song "Girl on Fire" with Nicki Minaj. After the performance, the winner of Video of the Year was announced and it was none other than Rihanna who claimed the coveted gong thanks to her visuals of "We Found Love".

The evening was closed by a lovely performance from miss Taylor Swift, who cheered the audience with her chart-topping new single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". Clad in a sailor top and black shorts, the country music beauty got the crowd going at the end of the star-studded show.

Hosted by Kevin Hart, the 29th annual MTV VMAs took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. A host of famous celebrities from Miley Cyrus, Pink, Rita Ora, Amber Rose, Emma Watson and more were all on hand to support the prestigious event. Other winners at the event included Demi Lovato (Best Video With a Message), Coldplay (Best Rock Video), Chris Brown (Best Male Video), Nicki Minaj (Best Female Video), Drake (Best Hip-Hop Video), and Calvin Harris (Best EDM Video).
