The star-studded actioner claims the champion title for two weeks in a row, while '2016: Obama's America' scores the biggest conservative documentary of all time.

AceShowbiz - On a relatively slow weekend, "The Expendables 2" manages to reclaim its champion title on the North American box office. The star-studded actioner takes in $13.4 million, marking the smallest gross for a No. 1 movie since "New Year's Eve" topped the chart with merely $13 million last December.
Staying at the second and third places respectively are "The Bourne Legacy" and "ParaNorman". The former bags $9.3 million for a total domestic cume of $85.5 million in its third week, while the latter adds $8.6 million to its $28.2 million total gross after two weeks of playing Stateside.
"The Campaign" and "The Dark Knight Rises" place fourth and fifth respectively. The political comedy collects $7.4 million for a total cume of $64.5 million in its third week, while the DC superhero flicks grabs $7.2 million for a total gross of $422.1 million in its sixth week.
Not a single new wide release this weekend is able to pass the $7 million mark over the Friday-Sunday period. *Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Premium Rush" and Dax Shepard's "Hit and Run" only secure the seventh and tenth places with $6 million and $4.6 million respectively. Ashley Greene's "The Apparition" fails to enter the top ten and lands on the twelfth spot with $2.8 million.
*The big surprise comes from John Sullivan's anti-Obama documentary, "2016: Obama's America". Having been released since last month in selected theaters, the indie film lands on the eighth place this weekend with $6.5 million for a total cume of $9 million.
With the result, "Obama's America" becomes the top grosser of the year for a documentary (excluding nature films), besting Lee Hirsch 's controversial pic "Bully" ($3.5 million). The political film also becomes the biggest conservative documentary of all time, beating Nathan Frankowski's Darwinism pic "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" ($7.7 million).

*UPDATE (Aug. 28, 2012 01:19 A.M. GMT): When the final figures came out on Monday, August 27, "Premium Rush" dropped another slot to the eight. Hence, it swapped place with "2016: Obama's America", which now secured the seventh position on the chart.
