Movie

MGM has reportedly approached some actors including Owen to replace Laurie, who was initially set to star as the evil CEO of Omni Corp.

AceShowbiz - Jose Padilha's "RoboCop" remake must restart its hunt for an actor to tackle the villainous role. Hugh Laurie, who was originally tapped to play the antagonist, has officially bailed out of the project due to an undisclosed reason.

According to Deadline, MGM is currently approaching "a small group of actors" to fill the role that was turned down by Laurie. Among those who were eyed for the part was Clive Owen. Both the studio's and the actor's reps, however, haven't released a statement regarding the report.

The antagonist role that Laurie has passed on was "the evil CEO of Omni Corp." The company itself is the one which creates RoboCop for its own gain. Should Owen seal the deal, he will join Joel Kinnaman who is cast as the titular cyborg.

The new "RoboCop" is set in 2029 when multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Slated for an August 9, 2013 release in the U.S., "RoboCop" also stars Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, Abbie Cornish as the protagonist's conflicted wife, and Samuel L. Jackson as a patriotic media mogul. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley are also on board to support the sci-fier.
