The couple, who never officially confirmed they were dating, has turned their relationship from romantic to platonic.

AceShowbiz - Katy Perry and John Mayer's budding romance is short-lived. A source tells PEOPLE that the couple, who was first romantically linked in November 2010 and then reconnected earlier this summer, is no longer dating.

"They'll end up as friends," the source claims. "They were honestly having fun. People made it out to be far more than it was."

Their representatives remain quiet on the matter, but rumor suggests it's John who dumped Katy. "She held off from his advances for the longest time," a source tells Radar Online. "She eventually gave in, fell head over heels for him and then - yep - once he had made his conquest, he dumped her."

The pair allegedly met at a friend's dinner party on Tuesday, August 21 and ignored each other. "When they passed each other they both just kept their head's down. It was like they had this incredible animosity for each other and everyone else at the party could feel it," an insider claims.

A different source says to Us Weekly that Katy is heartbroken by the split. "She's really upset about it," the source states. Another adds, "She is making it seem like it wasn't serious with John, but she is hurt."

Just a few days earlier, Katy and John were spotted leaving a house party together in Los Feliz. They didn't hold hand, but hopped a same car. They once also had a dinner at Chateau Marmont and attended a friend's birthday party together.

"They almost acted like they've been a couple for a long time," an eyewitness testified back then. "It definitely didn't seem like a new relationship."

Katy was previously married to Russell Brand. After divorcing, she was linked to Florence and the Machine's guitarist Robert Ackroyd. John, meanwhile, dated a series of Hollywood beauties like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.
