Contrary to previous rumor, the 'Hairspray' actor reportedly won't play the titular superhero but he's up for an undisclosed role.

AceShowbiz - Would John Travolta star in "The Toxic Avenger" remake? Words have run rampant on the Internet that the "Savages" actor has snatched a role in the Steve Pink-directed action comedy project. The rumor was first sparked by It's on the Grid, which attached Travolta's name in the cast ensemble of the reboot.

It was later speculated that the Vincent Vega of "Pulp Fiction" was cast as the titular mop-wielding radioactive superhero. While there are no official words from the thesp's camp, Variety's Jeff Sneider has clarified that the 58-year-old star was indeed circling a role in the film but not as the titular character.

"I've been tracking him for that film, but not to play THE TOXIC AVENGER himself. Pink just signed on to direct 2 other pics too," so Sneider tweeted about Travolta's casting. Still, details of what character the actor would play are kept secret.

Written by Steve Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell, "The Toxic Avenger" remake is based on 1984 comedy horror film released by Troma Entertainment. The original film was set in Tromaville, New Jersey which was terrorized by criminals. Among the residents of Tromaville was Melvin, a nerdy emaciated janitor at the local health club.

A gang of thugs devised a cruel hoax that went horribly wrong as Melvin was cast through a third story window into a vat of hazardous toxic waste. However, an unexpected metamorphosis took place. As the chemicals took hold of his body, Melvin turned into the Toxic Avenger, doer of good, and brutal mauler of evil.
