Roseanne Barr Mocked and Praised by Ex Tom Arnold at Comedy Central Roast
Roseanne Barr was a subject of other comedians' jokes at "Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne" on Saturday night, August 4 at the Hollywood Palladium. Jane Lynch, who was tapped as a roastmaster, opened the show by saying, "She's one of those rare celebrities so famous that she's referred to by just one name - b***h." She continued, "I waved to you outside but then I realized it was just one of those inflatable parking lot gorillas."
Bar was genuinely surprised when her ex-husband Tom Arnold showed up toward the end of the show. "I'm not here to tear Roseanne a new one, because I've seen the old one," he said, before poking fun at her size, "Rosie, this is true - she actually had 'Property of Tom Arnold' tattooed on her hip, which made me the fourth largest property owner in California."
The "True Lies" actor then paid tribute to Barr as recalling, "In 1985, Roseanne went on Johnny Carson, which is every comic's dream back then. She killed, he laughed his ass off, he gave her a thumbs up and he invited her to sit on his couch. She got validation from the king which can never be taken away from her."
Also taking the stage were the likes of Amy Schumer, Seth Green, Katey Sagal, Jeffrey Ross and Ellen Barkin. Schumer joked about Barr's plan to run for the White House, "I was surprised you were running for president. I just think a lot of people just couldn't picture you, like, running."
Green jokingly said, "The thing with Roseanne is she has enough money not to work. But she still does a TV show every few years to punish the rest of us. You've even had two reality shows, which is a lot for someone who is completely out of touch with reality."
Sagal added, "It's great to see Roseanne back in the spotlight. Technically, it's two spotlights, but you get the idea," while Barkin inserted a praise to Barr in her foul-mouthed speech, "You totally changed the way men do not give a f*** about women's opinion."
Ross, meanwhile, made the audience shocked with some references to the Aurora shooting. Dressing as the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, he said to Green, "Congratulations. This is actually a really big night for you. You haven't gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora."
"I'm kidding! You're not like James Holmes. At least he's doing something in a movie theater that people remember," he added, which was responded by a boo from the audience. The stand-up comedian then joked about Barr's weight, "Instead of running for president, why don't you try walking on a treadmill? I'd vote for you but I'm against big government. That's just what we need, a round president in an oval office."
Speaking backstage after the taping, Barr said of Ross' jokes about the theater mass shooting. "That crossed the line," she admitted, but quickly noted, "But comedy is about moving the line... And where is the line in a country that has freedom of speech? Maybe there isn't one."
"Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne" will air in its edited version Sunday, August 12 at 10 P.M. ET/PT on Comedy Central.
