The writer/producer of the Roland Emmerich-directed 'Godzilla' in 1998 expresses his hope on Gareth Edwards' upcoming reboot, 'I'd be very happy if they pull it off and do a great one.'

AceShowbiz - Gareth Edwards' upcoming remake of "Godzilla" has raised high hopes among fans especially after it revealed surprisingly well-polished footage at recent San Diego Comic-Con. One of those who hoped the reboot would be better than its predecessor was Dean Devlin, who wrote and produced the 1998 big-budgeted take on "Godzilla", which was unfortunately derided for being "too silly and cheesy."
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Devlin agreed that Edwards' new adaptation of the fire-breathing monster should be better than the Roland Emmerich-directed version. "I know I screwed up my Godzilla," he admitted. "I'd be very happy if they pull it off and do a great one."
Devlin admitted that he envied Edwards for his works, while stating, "I always wish I had another shot at it." Still, he stressed, "But, listen, Godzilla is something that I grew up loving. We worked hard to go make one. We kind of blew it. I think everyone gets me. I wish them nothing but the best. I would love it if the whole Godzilla franchise was revitalized for a new generation."
Previously at Comic-Con, director Edwards claimed that he would take the reboot project "seriously." He promised confidently, "If this really hapened, what would it be like? It's very grounded [and] realistic," before adding, "I wanted to see this movie this way all my life. I've never worked this hard and this long that lasted this few seconds since I lost my virginity."
As for Devlin, though his and Emmerich's "Godzilla" was relatively not that successful, they intended to team up once again to revive another sci-fi flick, "Independence Day". However, Devlin noted that the project was still away from securing the greenlight. "We want to make this happen. I don't know if we can," he said.
"There's a lot of moving parts. I will say from Roland's position and my position, we feel like we finally cracked it," he continued. "We're excited about it and want to do it. Whether we can pull it off, I can't tell you. But we are working hard to make it happen."
