'Rises of the Planet of the Apes' claims the coveted Best Science Fiction Film award, while 'Super 8' brings J.J. Abrams in winning the Best Director prize.

AceShowbiz - Winners of the 38th Annual Saturn Awards have been announced on Thursday, July 26. In movie category, Rupert Wyatt's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" led the pack by claiming three nods each.
"Rise" was named the Best Science Fiction Film by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The James Franco-starring movie also brought Andy Serkis in winning the Best Supporting actor gong thanks to his mo-cap performance while playing Caesar. Additionally, the film grabbed the Best Special Effects prize.
Though failing to claim the top prize, "Super 8" successfully brought its director J.J. Abrams in claiming the Best Director award. It also won Best Music for composser Michael Giacchino, as well as Best Performance by a Younger Actor for Joel Courtney.
Other movie winners at the annual awards included "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" (Best Fantasy Film), "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)" (Best Horror/Thriller Film), and "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol" (Best Action/Adventure Film).
Taking home the Best Actor and Best Actress prizes respectively were Michael Shannon from "Take Shelter" and Kirsten Dunst" from "Melancholia". On the other hand, "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class" snatched the Best Costume and Best Make-Up kudos respectively.
The 2012 Saturn Awards were presented for the period covering from February 1, 2011 to January 31 this year. Of this year's event, Academy President Robert Holguin said, "In one of the most rewarding years ever for genre entertainment, these films and TV shows proved that imaginations, creativity, and technology are blending in extraordinary ways, allowing these previously specialized genres to become the very heart of the entertainment industry."
In addition to movie winners, Saturn Awards revealed the winners in TV category which included "Breaking Bad", "Fringe" and "The Walking Dead" among others.
