Karl Urban Dishes on Returning to 'Dredd' Sequel, Praises Lena Headey's Ma-Ma
Movie

'I just think there's so much fertile ground to explore within the character and within the world,' Urban says of why the sequel to 'Dredd' should be made.

AceShowbiz - A few weeks ago, screenwriter Alex Garland teased that "Dredd" could be developed as a trilogy. Weighing in on the scribe's statement during the London Film and Comic Con earlier this July, lead actor Karl Urban opened up that he's ready to go back to the sequel but only if the first upcoming film "blows up at the box office."

"Yeah, absolutely. But you know I just want to say if you know this film is a one-off cult classic, than I'm cool with that because I'm really proud of the film," Urban said of the movie. "And we showed it the other night and the audience loved it. And to me that's like, I'm happy. I'm good. If we don't end making more of these, than I'm cool with that because it's all good on my end."

He went on telling 411 Mania, "If we're fortunate enough if it blows up at the box office, then absolutely I would definitely love to come back and reprise the role and make more of these." He added, "I just think there's so much fertile ground to explore within the character and within the world."

Of what to expect from the possible sequel, Urban said, "I would love to see the continuing story and the evolution of these characters and the relationship between Anderson and Dredd. And it would be interesting to find out more about the world, more about Dredd. It would be really cool to see the Dark Judges. There's so much. And it would be great to - we've seen one aspect, one sector of Mega City One. It would be great to see other aspects."

In another interview with Movie Fanatic, Urban gushed about his co-star Lena Headey's performance as villainous Ma-Ma in "Dredd". Having nothing but good words for the "Game of Thrones" star, Urban claimed, "I think there is a scary, beautiful, violent, way off-beat, amazing performance that Lena has delivered in this film. She's enigmatic. You're drawn to her when she's on the screen. The choices that she made were so interesting."

"I have to confess, there was one day we were shooting the scene where I'm confronting her and we're at opposite ends of the room and I've got my helmet on looking at her and she's looking at me. And she just starts laughing, manically laughing. And I just feel within me the rage growing. She is that (expletive) good. She knows how to push your buttons."

An adaptation of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's comic strip, "Dredd" follows the titular character who is the most feared judge among other elite Street Judges in Mega City One. He has the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot if necessary. The R-rated movie, which received positive reviews after it was screened during the preview night of this year's San Diego Comic-Con, will be released in the U.S. on September 21.
