A judge ordered the British actor to perform a service for a charity of his choice and pay fine in place of criminal charges.

AceShowbiz - Russell Brand is sentenced for smashing a paparazzo's iPhone a few months ago. The actor's lawyer Robert Glass entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf but the judge offered an alternative to criminal prosecution by making a deal that works for both sides.

New Orleans District Attorney charged Brand with misdemeanor criminal damage for throwing the phone through a glass window during a heated confrontation. The "Hop" actor faced up to six months in jail and/or $500 in fine if convicted.

Brand, who did not appear in court, was ordered to perform 20 hours of community service and pay $500 in court fees by August 31. Glass told Reuters that the British actor is free to choose the charity or agency anywhere, "whether it be California or England." The attorney also said Brand plans to work with people battling addiction.

Once Brand completes the community service, a court hearing will be held and his charges would be dropped.
