Sources said the Christopher Nolan-directed movie opened big this weekend with more than $160 million despite the Aurora, Colorado killing.

AceShowbiz - Sources said "The Dark Knight Rises" gathered around $161.1 million on its debut weekend. The number is big but relatively far from the projected $180 million to $200 million income. The second movie "The Dark Knight" debuted with $158 million and went on grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

According to Deadline's sources, "Dark Knight Rises" brought in $76.1 million Friday, July 20. However, the number dropped 41|percent| on Saturday mostly because of the midnight shows, taking $46.2 million in total. The Sunday intake is projected at $39.3 million.

Major movie studios have joined forces with Warner Bros not to release their box office numbers out of respect of Friday massacre in Aurora, Colorado. The official ticket sales for this weekend will be released on Monday.

The shooting in Aurora that killed 12 moviegoers had canceled the Paris, Mexico City and Tokyo red carpet premiere plan. The international grosses, which determine whether the movie is a success or not, will not also be released until Monday either.

It is unclear how much the Christopher Nolan-directed movie has suffered in the Box Office following the tragedy. Some cinema chains did not appear to have canceled the screenings this weekend as some theaters have beefed up the security. But, some theater chains provide refunds for those who have purchased the ticket before Friday.
