'Star Trek 2': Scribe Struggles to Find Title, Karl Urban Pulls Prank at Comic-Con
Though it's already in the middle of production, J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated "Star Trek" sequel remains untitled. One of the sequel's scribes, Damon Lindelof, recently opened up to MTV News that finding a perfect name for the upcoming sci-fier was not as easy as it might seem.
"There have been more conversations about what we're going to call it than went into actually shooting it at this point," Lindelof said. He said that the problem in finding a name for the sequel was that he couldn't simply use "Star Trek 2" as the title since there's already "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".
Lindelof explained, "That was the genius of [Director Christopher] Nolan. There was 'Batman Begins', and now they're just going to be the 'Dark Knights' and not going to have 2's. It's hard to do movies without colons. I'm not talking about the colon that's in my body that I use for digestion."
The "Prometheus" scribe went on stating that he's actually avoiding the use of a colon for the sequel's title. "There's no word that comes after the colon after 'Star Trek' that's cool," he gushed. "Not that 'Star Trek: Insurrection' or 'First Contact' aren't good titles, it's just that everything that people are turned off about when it comes to 'Trek' is represented by the colon."
The title talk aside, Lindelof weighed in on Karl Urban's recent statement that there would be a "secret" video from "Star Trek 2" on YouTube that was set to be dropped before the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con ended. "I think Karl is off the reservation, as they say in the CIA," said the writer.
"I love him, and he is a genius, and I heard 'Dredd' paid huge," he added. "This is the thing about keeping secrets, which is sooner or later, it's going to come out because somebody said something and hopefully that doesn't happen on camera or formally in an interview. I don't begrudge Karl or anything that he said because this is his story too, but I will not confirm or deny anything that he said."
Urban had previously dished that first footage of "Star Trek 2" would be revealed in a foreseeable future. As fans have been anticipating for the said video, the actor fulfilled his promise by unveiling a "Comic-Con 2012 Sneak Peek" of the much awaited movie on his own YouTube chanel.
The video opens with an introduction of a "Star Trek" symbol. However, the rest of it might disappoint the fanboys since it features nothing but Urban having fun while surfing alone on the ocean.
The untitled Star Trek sequel will hit the U.S. cinemas on May 17, 2013.
