The Joss Whedon-directed movie becomes one of only three films in history ever to cross the milestone aside from James Cameron's 'Avatar' and 'Titanic'.

AceShowbiz - Though it has been released in the U.S. more than a month ago, "The Avengers" shows no sign of slowing down its record-breaking achievements. On Tuesday, June 26, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed that the superhero ensemble movie has reached the $600 million box office revenue domestically.

With the new achievement, the Joss Whedon-directed film officially becomes one of only three movies in history ever to reach the $600 million mark. Also bagging an estimated $1.4 billion worldwide, the Marvel Comics flick stands as the third highest grossing title of all time behind James Cameron's "Avatar" ($2.7 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.1 billion).

"The Avengers" has broken the record of the biggest opening ever by collecting a massive $207.4 million on its debut weekend. It also becomes the fastest movie ever to surpass the $200 million (2 days), $300 million (9 days), $400 million (14 days), and $500 million (23 days) thresholds.

A sequel to the hit superhero movie has already been planned, while Marvel and Disney are still working on "Iron Man 3", "Thor 2" and an untitled Captain America sequel. "From 'The Avengers' we get a chance to make 'Thor 2' and 'Captain America 2' and 'Iron Man 3' and hopefully another 'Avengers' movie. So this one film that is immensely successful... is going to get a number of other films and franchises," Disney CEO Bob Iger announced back in May.
