Owl City Calls Carly Rae Jepsen Collaboration 'Dream Come True'
A day after releasing "Good Time", Owl City a.k.a Adam Young took some time to share how he got Carly Rae Jepsen as his duet-partner in the song. Having nothing but good words for the "Call Me Maybe" hitmaker, Young called their collaboration "a dream come true."
In a phone interview with MTV on Thursday, June 21, Young explained how he first came out with the idea to write "Good Time". He dished, "I feel like every artist is inherently granted one shot to sing about having a good time in his or her life, and six months ago, I realized I hadn't cashed in my chips yet."
"So I thought, 'I'm gonna sit down and I'm gonna give this a shot... and get my friend Carly to sing on it'," he said of the song which tells about listening to Prince and partying until morning. "The final product rarely exceeds your expectations, and this thing just kind of happened."
On how he approached Jepsen to work with him, the 25-year-old musician explained that his people called the Justin Bieber protege's camp and "it was this whole worlds-collide thing, and it was kind of dream come true." He enthused, "I can't believe it happened."
Young, who branded the collaboration "a happy accident," went on sharing, "[It was] so kind to lend her talent to this song, so yeah, it worked out... I feel like it's one of those songs, it kind of always needed to be a duet. That was the initial idea from step one."
"Good Time" was written by Owl City back in the winter of 2011. The Minnesota native wanted to create a tune that "anybody from any walk of life can sing." After releasing the song, Owl City and Jepsen are set to shoot its music video in New York though Young actually wants to film it in Hawaii.
"It would have to take place in Hawaii, 'cause it's such a summer song," he said. "So there's probably $1 million in flights right there. But probably somewhere very dreamy and summery and somewhere you can feel like you can take a look around you, and you're already having a good time."
Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time", which was released on Young's SoundCloud account on June 20, has received generally positive reviews from observers. Billboard wrote, "It only makes sense that he's joined by Jepsen...[on] a track that could become a radio staple for the rest of the summer," while Entertainment Weekly stated, " 'Good Time' goes down easier than a frozen margarita at a beachfront tiki bar."
