Katy Perry on Her Next Project: 'I'm Preparing for a Record Label Now'
Katy Perry has already scored a lot of achievements at the age of 27, but she admits there's still one thing that she hasn't done in her music career. The "I Kissed a Girl" hitmaker opens up that she has a dream to create her own record label.
In a cover story interview for the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the Santa Barbara-born songstress shares, "I'm preparing for it now." She adds, "And when this record label does come to fruition, I'm going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success."
Should the project go as planned, Katy will follow the footsteps of other pop sensations who have their own label such as Madonna who created Maverick Records in the '90s, Prince who started Paisley Park Records in 1985, as well as Frank Sinatra who founded Reprise Records in the '60s.
In addition to speaking about her passion project, Katy, who has been signed to EMI's Capitol Records since 2007, discusses her bittersweet experience during her recent California Dreams world tour. "There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I'm about to go up on that ramp and sing 'Teenage Dream'," she shares.
On adapting her divorce from Russell Brand into her songs, the "E.T." singer explains, "Like how I write my songs, honestly has always worked for me. So if it ain't broke, why f***ing fix it? ... Nobody knows what really happened [in the breakup] expect the two people who are in it."
Katy has recently dropped a music video in support of her song "Wide Awake". The fairytale-themed video has sparked speculations that it was inspired by her broken marriage with Russell. Explaining the meaning of the song itself, Katy told MTV, "Well, this song, I have a lot of different emotions and feelings in all of my songs."
"This song in particular is a dose of reality. It's kind of like coming down from a high. You've been on cloud nine for so long, and it can't always be so sweet and sometimes you need to realize that, and you have to pick yourself up and move forward and face the facts of life and know that this is just a lesson you learn and you're stronger because of it."
