Showtime: No More 'Weeds' Beyond Season 8

Showtime says no more "" past the upcoming eighth season. The cable network admits to owing the pot comedy and "" for "cutting-edge original programming" that made it a stand-out among the crowd, therefore they want to give "Weeds" a proper send-off this summer.

"How they get brought home is really important," said Showtime entertainment president David Nevins. "In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show [creator Jenji Kohan and lead star ] and an audience that's really invested in the show. TV fans love nothing better than to complain about how shows end and we really want to end this one the right way."

Kohan herself is saddened by the end of the show but has no regrets, saying about the show's protagonist Nancy Botwin, "I'm so proud of what we do here and that it's about a strong woman lead who's really flawed. We get to do comedy right up against drama, which a lot of shows don't get the opportunity to do."

The new season begins July 1. Kohan said she has not decided on how to end Nancy's adventure in the dangerous world. "We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we're trying to figure out how to top ourselves," she said. However, Lionsgate TV Group president Kevin Beggs is confident that Kohan will write great episodes to conclude everything. "It's an art form," he told EW.
