Christopher Nolan Explains What Makes Catwoman a Femme Fatale in 'Dark Knight Rises'
Movie

Admitting that he at first hesitated to include Catwoman in his final Batman film, director Chris says that he finally decided to present the character as a 'hard-edged kind of criminal.'

AceShowbiz - Director Christopher Nolan opened up about the importance of Selina Kyle a.k.a Catwoman's role in his last Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises". The English filmmaker branded the female character a "very iconic figure in the Batman pantheon", but revealed she will not be referred by the name in the forthcoming movie.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Chris explained how he first went with the idea to bring Catwoman to "The Dark Knight Rises". He said, "I was nervous about how she would fit into our world. But Jonah [Nolan] was very much convinced that there would be a great way to do it and eventually turned me around."

The director went on sharing that he eventually decided to present the character as a dangerous lady in his movie. "Once I got my head around the idea of looking at that character through the prism of our films, saying, 'Who could that person be in real-life?', we figured it out. She's a bit of a con-woman, something of a grifter. A hard-edged kind of criminal."

Chris' younger brother Jonathan Nolan, who co-wrote the script, elaborated further why Catwoman must be included in the finale. "Chris often comes from a position of, 'Why should we do this?' You know, presumed guilty. But I said, 'What we're endeavoring to do here is tell a complete take on the Batman mythos.' And a complete take of the Batman mythos without the character for me was sacrilegious," Jonah said.

"You've gotta gave her, because she has a delicious greyness to her that helps define who Batman is," he added. "She keeps wavering on this line of, 'Is she a good guy or a bad guy?' Well, she's kind of neither. And that's why, to me, that relationship and that character only enhances the universe - an the Batman character."

Starring as Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises" is Anne Hathaway. She will be joined by Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as terrorist leader Bane, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. The movie will open wide in the U.S. on July 20.

Aside from talking about Catwoman, Chris weighed in on his role in Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman flick, "Man of Steel". He said, "It's Zack's movie so it'd be a bit rude of me to turn up and say I've got a few ideas now. My big point of responsibility was helping shepard David [S. Goyer]'s script. When I'm finished with this I'll be there for whatever Zack wants from me, but it's very much his movie."
