The ex-husband said the late singer took drugs way before she met him and he did not realize that she still fought the addiction before her death.

AceShowbiz - Bobby Brown gets defensive in his first interview since Whitney Houston's death in February. The singer refuses to take the blame for what happened to his ex-wife whose autopsy revealed that she died "due to drowning due to effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use."

People began pointing their fingers on Bobby when thinking who should be responsible for her self-destructive path. Telling "Today" host Matt Lauer, Bobby said the accusations "make me feel terrible. But you know, I know differently. I think if anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us ...they would know how we felt about each other. They would know how happy we were together."

Whitney and Bobby were married for 15 years and had one daughter. Bobby recalled how their reality show, "Being Bobby Brown" gave them a wakeup call. "We [were] able to see that our drug use had affected our relationship, had affected the love that we felt for each other," he said. However, Bobby denied that he introduced drugs to Whitney. "I didn't get high before I met Whitney," he claimed, adding Whitney used drugs "way before" she met him. "I'm not the reason she's gone," he stated.

Bobby also confessed, "I love that woman with everything that I am. And I believe she loved me the same way. We wouldn't have been able to make the most beautiful girl in the world - without love. And that's the truth." He himself did not see the death coming because he saw her a week before the death and she "just looked like she was in a good place."

So convinced that Bobby did not know that his ex was still fighting. "I was hurt," he said upon finding out the reason of her death. "I didn't know she was struggling with it still. It's a hard fight to, maintain sobriety that way."
