Reacting to Kevin Feige's statement that he might cast another actor to lead the 'Iron Man' film series, Downey Jr. says, 'I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes.'

AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr. has reacted to Kevin Feige's recent statement that the "Iron Man" film series could still go on with another actor if Downey Jr. leaves the franchise someday. The "Tropic Thunder" actor stated that he wouldn't approve if someone else steps into his shoes and admitted that he would like to play the armored hero for as long as he could.

"I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes," the husband of Susan Downey told MTV News at the closing night celebration of the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, April 28. He then jokingly asked the interviewer, "I wonder who's playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you're here to tell me?"

Though the 42-year-old thesp was not sure about how many "Iron Man" movies he could tackle in the future, he did confess that he would stay in the franchise as long as they remain good films. "I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while," he said. "As usual in my book, it's all about quality and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I'll keep showing up."

After reprising his iconic role in "The Avengers", Downey Jr. will next return to "Iron Man 3" which will kick off filming this May in North Carolina. The Oscar-nominated actor admitted that he couldn't wait to work with such actors as Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain in the third film.

"It's funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion. 'Iron Man 3' is really shaping up to be something special," he gushed before adding, "We start in a couple weeks. I'm sure I'll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead." Urged to reveal what secrets did he mean, the actor wittily responded, "I'd like to tell you all my secrets, but I forget them."

Previously, producer Feige told Badass Digest that he could turn the "Iron Man" franchise into something like James Bond's if Downey Jr. bows out of the series someday. "Let's put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn't, and I'm still here making these movies, we don't take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it," Feige stated.

"Iron Man 3" reportedly will be loosely based on Warren Ellis' six-issue "Extremis" comic book series, which presents a new origin story that focuses on nanotechnology. In addition to Downey Jr., the upcoming film will bring back Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle as Pepper Potts and Rhodey respectively.
