'American Idol' Recap: Top 6 Take on Queen, Joshua Gets Standing Ovation Twice
"American Idol" was back on Wednesday, April 25 with the Top 6 singing two songs, one from Queen's catalog and another which is their personal choice. Roger Taylor and Brian May of the legendary rock band stopped by to give some advice to the contestants. The veteran musicians and the young singers then collaborated on stage to perform a medley of "Another One Bites the Dust", "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions".
Ryan Seacrest, who reportedly caught a stomach bug, sat on a stool while introducing Jessica Sanchez as the first performer in the first round. She took on "Bohemian Rhapsody". Jennifer Lopez loved her voice, but thought that she needed to "go more into that rock performance." Steven Tyler said, "I think Freddie Mercury would have been proud to hear that even though rock is not your forte."
Skylar Laine made one of her best performances with a cover of "The Show Must Go On", so Randy Jackson said. J.Lo said she got goosies watching Skylar's performance, as Steven gushed, "That was over the top... That was fabulous."
Joshua Ledet got the first standing ovation of the night with his rendition of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". J.Lo declared that he is her favorite on the show, while Steven added, "You have such a classic style, you sound like nobody else and Freddy would love the way you did the two step."
Elise Testone belted out "I Want It All", which marked another best performance by the 20-year-old singer. "That was you in your element, you looked great and sounded great, you murdered it," J.Lo commented. Steven chimed in, "You found your stride, you sang that like the classic song that was."
Phillip Phillips put a different twist on "Fat Bottomed Girls", which earned praise from J.Lo for his effort to "give us different flavors." For Randy, however, it was a so-so performance as he commented, "If I am being really honest, I like it but I didn't love it, it was good."
Hollie Cavanagh sang "Save Me", but the performance may not save her from the chopping block. Though calling it good, Randy said, "I didn't like that you pulled back so far in the song, you need to have a moment and that song didn't have that for you." J.Lo added, "It went off a tiny bit when you did that. I want to see you enjoy it more, smile more. I still think you are thinking too much."
For the second round, Jessica sang Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father Again" dedicated to her father. Randy and Steven thought she definitely can sing every song, as J.Lo commented, "That is probably the best way I have ever heard that song, it was beautiful."
Skylar covered Jason Aldean's "Tatoos on This Town", and she "hit that big note at the end," Randy said. J.Lo quipped, "You slayed it," but Steven thought it was not as good as when she sang "Heard It Through the Grapevine".
India.Arie's "Ready for Love" was Joshua's personal choice, which helped him earn another standing ovation. Randy and J.Lo lost for words due to the amazing performances, while Steven expressed his wish for the Louisiana singer, "I hope the labels gets you some good songs."
Elise opted to do "Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix, but Steven thought it wasn't the right song choice. "You touched my heart with that but you got to pick songs that people know," so the Aerosmith vocalist said. Randy also complained about the song choice, but J.Lo thought Elise "slayed that song so much."
Phillip covered "The Stone" by Dave Matthews Band. J.Lo said it was pretty, but "too artsy" and "not right for this point in the competition." Randy appreciated it anyway, as Steven called the performance entertaining although he didn't like the melody.
Hollie did "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus and earned praises from the judges. "That is the Hollie that we love... That was beautiful, perfect song for you," Randy said. Steven added, "It doesn't matter what kind of accent you have, you sang it beautiful, good for you," commenting on her British accent which was discussed by the other finalists.
