Director/screenwriter McKay says that the 'Anchorman' sequel will be set in the late 1970s, when the Action News Team must adapt with the new era of 24 hours news.

AceShowbiz - Plot details of "Anchorman 2" are still scarce for now, but director/screenwriter Adam McKay has promised that the upcoming sequel will offer some fresh ideas, including "a big blast of change." In a recent interview with Empire magazine, McKay revealed that the second Ron Burgundy movie will involve the Action News Team's efforts to adapt with trend change.
"We know these guys never deal well with change," said McKay. "And the good thing is that there's a big blast of change coming, according to the regular timeline. We're going to be throwing a lot of innovation at them, and they're not going to handle it well."
McKay elaborated further that the "Anchorman" sequel will be set in the late 1970s where 24 hours news trend has just begun. "It's right when all the news started changing with the 24-hour news cycle in '78 or '79," he explained.
"All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors," added McKay, "and any time you're talking about the diversity and the Action News team, that's always fun to deal with." Additionally, the filmmaker opened up that that he has already had "a couple of ideas" for another epic gang fight that includes a "total bloody chaos."
On the progress of the screenplay writing, McKay admitted that it's still far from being completed. "We've done about two percent! Half a percent? We've got five pages of story notes and chunks of story," he said. "We're holding up writing for the next three months."
The original "Anchorman" revolves around Will Ferrell's Burgundy, who is a top-rated anchorman in San Diego during the '70s. The film grossed $90.5 million worldwide against the budget of a mere $26 million.
