Hot 100 Gets Digital Makeover, Fun. Remain No. 1
Music

Benefiting artists whose online fame has yet to translate into airplay, the newly-improved chart still sees last week's champ holding the top spot firmly on its inaugural week.

AceShowbiz - Billboard Hot 100 revises its way to rank a song's popularity. The music magazine will now take into account data from streaming-music sites in addition to including radio-airplay ratings and digital song sales into calculation. Despite the adjustment, digital sales still become the major factor to compile the single list, followed by radio and online streams.

Last week's champ Fun. christen the revised chart by sitting at the top spot. The indie band pull in the strongest digital sales with their single "We Are Young" which shifts 322,000 downloads sold (up 7|percent|). Featuring Janelle Monae, the single is also most popular online and on radio as it draws 1.1 million on-demand plays and 46 million audience impressions.

Talking about the Hot 100's digital makeover, Billboard's editorial director Bill Werde said, "It's so important that we are vigilant in recognizing a changing marketplace almost constantly these days. When you look at these streaming subscription services, even in the last year, you really see how they have come of age and I just think the time is now to do this."

Streaming online indeed has become fans' favorite way to listen to their beloved songs. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the number of song streams on six of the biggest services, Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG, Slacker, Muve Music and Rdio, rose from 300 million a week to 494 million in the week ending March 4. In the same time, the count of song sales reach 27.1 million.

The change, however, seems to show subtle difference on the list after all the points are tallied. Kelly Clarkson remains at No. 2 with "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" as it garners 175,000 downloads, 118 million audience impressions on radio, and 442,000 streams. Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" occupies the third place, and The Wanted's "Glad You Came" holds its last week's position at No. 4.

Rounding up the top 5 is Gotye. The one-man band flies from No. 9 to No. 5 with "Somebody That I Used to Know", which features Kimbra. The single, which tops U.K. chart and Alternative Songs list, pulls in 153,000 download (up 3|percent|), gets around 30 million audience impressions on radio, and gathers 776,000 on-demand online plays.
