AceShowbiz - Funeral plans for Davy Jones have not yet been finalized, but words are coming out that he will be cremated. Bringing out the news was TMZ. The gossip site reported that the cremation has yet to take place, but noted that the family of the late member of The Monkees is discussing what to do with his ashes.
The "I'm a Believer" hitmaker died of a severe heart attack in a Florida hospital on Wednesday, February 29 morning. Before his passing, he was said to have been complaining of shortness of breath. On Friday, his spokeswoman Helen Kensick revealed that a private family service will be held in Florida, but no date for the funeral was disclosed.
While Jones' fellow Monkees bandmates were quick to express their sadness over the loss, they won't likely attend his private funeral. Micky Dolenz told Billboard.com that he, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith made the decision to honor the wishes of Jones' family and to let them say goodbye without any media interruption.
"My understanding is they want to avoid a media circus and... the family wants to keep it very, very low-key and very, very private," explained Dolenz. "And you can imagine as soon as one or two or any of us were to show up, it would very quickly be degraded into something that I don't think his immediate family would want to deal with. So I'm kind of expecting their wishes, whatever their wishes may be."
Dolenz additionally said he hopes that the surviving Monkees will reunite at the public memorials planned to take place in New York and England. "He obviously had fans and family and associates on both (U.S.) coasts and two continents," he said. "It's pretty early days, you know, to be making too many plans. I'm still in shock."
Jones is survived by wife Jessica Pacheco-Jones, three sisters, four daughters and three grandchildren. His family is asking for donations to be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
