Tim Burton Wants 'Dark Shadows' to Be 'as Human and Personal as Possible'
Movie

Speaking about his approach to the anticipated supernatural film, the 'Alice in Wonderland' helmer admits he won't use too much special effects and just wants to 'rely on the characters.'

AceShowbiz - While "Dark Shadows" hasn't even released its first trailer, director Tim Burton recently discussed the approach he used in the making of the much awaited supernatural film. In a recent interview with HorrorHound magazine, the British filmmaker opened up that he wanted the film to be "as human" as possible.

Burton explained that he wouldn't put too much special effects in "Dark Shadows" just like what he did in "Alice in Wonderland". He stated, "I want to rely on the characters... We were trying to keep it as human and personal as possible. Every effect should not seem like an effect."

Weighing in on the swirling rumors that the movie will include plenty of humorous elements, the spouse of Helena Bonham Carter said, "It's news to me... I always start things with the most serious of intentions." He added, "I sometimes find humor in things that aren't funny and vice versa."

Asked how he approached Johnny Depp's Barnabas look for the anticipated movie, the 53-year-old filmmaker answered, "We wound up with a nod to [original actor] Jonathan Frid's Barnabas. Because of the sensitive nature of the character, I liked the idea of his fingernails being long, a bit more tactile."

During the chat, Burton also shared about why he wanted to adapt "Dark Shadows" to the big screen. He confessed, "The reason I liked 'Dark Shadows' was that it was a weird family story. It just happened to have supernatural qualities to it."

Depp tackles the part of Barnabas Collins in "Dark Shadows". In the film, Collins is described as a rich, powerful and inveterate playboy who is also the master of Collinwood Manor. He, however, makes a grave mistake of breaking the heart of Bouchard, a witch who brings him to a fate worse than death; turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries after his death, Collins is inadvertently freed from his tomb. He emerges into a very different world of 1972 and returns to Collinwood Manor only to find his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. He must now have some run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts.

Being scheduled to open wide in the U.S. theaters on May 11, the thriller also stars Eva Green, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley and Jonny Lee Miller.
