'John Carter' Extended Clip Gives Longer Look at White Apes Battle Scene
Movie

Taylor Kitsch's titular hero and Willem Dafoe's alien warrior Tars are forced to enter a kind of gladiator game, where they must risk their lives to fight against the fearsome monsters.

AceShowbiz - Walt Disney Pictures has debuted a new extended clip from "John Carter". The sneak-peek video offers a much longer look at the titular hero as he is forced to risk his life in a Barsoomian version of gladiator game. Along with his wounded alien friend, Tars Tarkas, the hero must defeat not just one but two ferocious White Apes in the fight-to-the-death battle.

Director Andrew Stanton once explained that the White Ape is one of the magnets in the anticipated novel-adapted movie. Offering details about the creatures, he told Entertainment Weekly, "They're sort of an oversized gorilla in the books, and they're kind of ubiquitous. They're littered everywhere through at least the first several novels."

"They were always cool, just from a visceral standpoint, [but] they don't really have a narrative function in the first book," the filmmaker added. "So what we did is we made the White Apes a formidable creature that you kind of hear about throughout the movie, but you never really witness. There's a subtle sense of anticipation for what these things might be like."

"John Carter" is a sweeping action-adventure film set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom a.k.a Mars. Based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the film tells the story of a war-weary, former military captain, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris.

After being premiered in Hollywood on Wednesday, February 22, the epic movie will open wide in theaters across the U.S. on March 9. Taylor Kitsch stars as the titular hero, while Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins play Tars and Dejah respectively. Rounding up the cast ensemble are Mark Strong, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Thomas Haden Church and Ciaran Hinds.
