According to Fandango, the Gary Ross-directed film scores the biggest first-day online ticketing sales since it has already sold out hundreds of showtimes in advance of its March 23 release date.

AceShowbiz - "The Hunger Games" has scored a new record for first-day ticket sales in advance of the film's March 23 release date. On Thursday, February 23, Fandango revealed that the forthcoming Gary Ross-directed movie has beaten the previous record held by "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" in May 2010.

Fandango claimed that the online tickets for "Hunger Games" have already sold out hundreds of showtimes for the film's opening weekend. Most of the tickets sold were for midnight screening on March 22. Theater owners are continuing to add new showtimes, while fans are scooping up advance tickets.

Of the new record, Fandango's Executive Vice President and General Manager Rick Butler said, " 'The Hunger Games' is off to a fantastic start." He added, "Yesterday [Wednesday, February 22] we saw the biggest first day advance ticketing sales in our company's nearly 12-year history, which is especially impressive for a March release and a non-sequel."

The tickets for "Hunger Games" conventional and IMAX theaters have been available for purchase starting from Wednesday morning. Fans who buy the tickets will receive an iTunes code to freely download a song called "Tomorrow Will Be Kinder" by The Secret Sisters from the movie's companion album; "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond", which will hit record stores on March 20.

Based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling book of the same name, "Hunger Games" follows Katniss Everdeen who replaces her sister to join annual fight-to-the-death games sponsored by Panem government. The highly anticipated movie stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz.
