'Safe House' Eclipses 'Ghost Rider 2' as Box Office Winner on President's Day Weekend

The Denzel Washington-starring action film tops the chart with $23.8 million, beating such new contenders as 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' and 'This Means War'.

AceShowbiz - On President's Day weekend, "Safe House" successfully takes over the champion title from last week's victor "The Vow" on North American box office. The Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds-starring action film also overshadows two newly released action-packed movies, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" and "This Means War".

"Safe House" grosses $23.8 million, dropping 40|percent| from last week. After two weeks playing in the U.S. theaters, the Daniel Espinosa-directed movie collects a total domestic cume of $78.3 million. Universal Pictures believes that the pic will continue to earn $28.5 million on the four-day holiday weekend.

Trailing close behind "Safe House" is Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams' romantic film "The Vow", which bags $23.1 million on its second weekend. The drama, which Sony Pictures estimates to earn $25.5 million over the four-day weekend, grabs a total domestic cume of $85.5 million since it was released on February 10.

Nicolas Cage's "Ghost Rider 2" opens on the third spot with $22.1 million, which is 52|percent| lower than "Ghost Rider" which debuted at $45.4 million in 2007. Sony Pictures expects the sequel to continue grossing $25 million over the four-day weekend. Receiving only a "C+" CinemaScore, "Ghost Rider 2" appeals to mostly male moviegoers who make up 61|percent| of the ticket buyers. 48|percent| of the audience are under the age of 25.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" lands on the fourth position this week with $19.9 million. Dropping only 27|percent| from last week, the fantasy adventure movie nabs a total domestic cume of $53.2 million after two weeks playing in cinemas.

Rounding up the top five is another new release "This Means War", which grosses $17.3 million. 20th Century Fox estimates the adult comedy movie, which receives an "A-" CinemaScore, will gross $20.5 million for the four-day weekend.

Meanwhile, this week's newcomer that fails to hit the top five is "The Secret World of Arrietty". The animated movie from acclaimed Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli opens on the ninth place with $6.4 million. The film is expected to gross $8 million over the four-day weekend.
