New Installment of 'I Am Legend' on the Move

However, it will not be a prequel to the apocalyptic-themed movie like many thought four years ago.

AceShowbiz - Back in 2008, there were talks about a prequel to "I Am Legend" being made but they never went far from speculation. On Friday, February 17, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. has finally closed deals with the film's producer Akiva Goldsman and the studio Overbrook Entertainment to do another installment which is not a prequel to the 2007 hit film.

Arash Amel, a new scribe who wrote the screenplay to "Grace of Monaco", has been signed to write the new "I Am Legend" movie. Lead star Will Smith is expected to reprise his role as surviving scientist Robert Neville but he reportedly would not commit until the script is finished. Meanwhile, director Francis Lawrence's participation is also unheard of.

"I Am Legend", that grossed $584 million worldwide, is a sci-fi horror film based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name. It follows Neville, the sole survivor in New York City who struggles valiantly to find a cure to the virus that wiped out the population.

Since it will not be a prequel, it will be a challenge for Amel to explain the story from the fact that Smith's character died in the end of the film. There was an alternate ending where Neville survived but it was not used in the final version.
